Say hello to the Sealion 7, BYD South Africa’s newest vehicle to make petrolheads jealous. It’s electric, it’s loaded, and it’s finally in Mzansi.
BYD has just expanded its South African electric lineup with the official launch of the BYD Sealion 7. It’s a sleek, high-performance battery electric SUV (BEV) that blends power, good range, and cutting-edge tech with coupe-like style. The Sealion 7 becomes the Chinese automaker’s fourth fully electric model in the country, joining the ATTO 3, Dolphin, and Seal sedan.
Power and performance
With two variants now available – Premium (rear-wheel drive) and Performance AWD (all-wheel drive) – the Sealion 7 is positioned as a luxury SUV with real muscle. The Performance version sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 4,5 seconds, thanks to a 390 kW dual-motor setup delivering 690 Nm of torque. Even the Premium variant is no slouch, reaching 100 km/h in 6,7 seconds with a top speed of 215 km/h across both trims.
Range and charging tech
Under the skin is BYD’s innovative Blade Battery, integrated into the vehicle’s structure through Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology. The 82,56 kWh pack offers a maximum WLTP range of 482 km, depending on the variant. When it’s time to top up, ultra-fast DC charging (150 kW) can take the battery from 20% to 80% in just 30 minutes, while an 11 kW AC wallbox charger is included for home use.
BYD has also included vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing you to power external devices – a handy feature for camping trips or power outages.
A smart and luxurious interior
Inside, the Sealion 7 offers a driver-focused cockpit with a 15,6-inch rotating infotainment screen (landscape or portrait orientation), wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10,25-inch digital instrument cluster, and 12 Dynaudio speakers for immersive audio. Comfort is taken seriously too, with ventilated and heated seats, memory functions, a panoramic sunroof, and dual-zone climate control.
There’s also plenty of space: a 500ℓ boot plus a 58ℓ front trunk (luggage compartment), thanks to the EV-specific platform design.
Safety and driver assistance
This SUV doesn’t hold back on safety tech either. Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking, and a Head-Up Display (HUD). The Sealion 7 is loaded with active safety systems that rival premium European competitors.
EV-first focus
While the newly launched BYD Shark 6 (plug-in hybrid bakkie) and Sealion 6 (plug-in hybrid SUV) also entered the market at the same time, the Sealion 7 is BYD’s clear electric flagship SUV. Its presence reinforces the brand’s ongoing commitment to bringing fully electric vehicles to South Africa – a country that is gradually but steadily embracing battery-powered motoring.
