Geely E2 goes on sale in South Africa from R340k

The Geely E2 has officially launched in South Africa, arriving in two specification grades, Aspire and Apex, priced at R339 900 and R389 900 respectively. The compact all-electric hatchback is based on the Geely Xingyuan, which was China’s best-selling car in 2025, and is now being sold across Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and, soon, the United Kingdom.

Geely has positioned the E2 as a premium entry-level EV, targeting buyers who want a properly sized electric hatchback without crossing the R400 000 threshold. The car is built on a dedicated EV architecture, uses a 39.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and is rear-wheel driven, which improves weight distribution and steering feel, and is unusual at this price point.

It will cost approximately R0.57 per kilometer to drive the Geely E2 when charging at home at R3.75 per kWh.

Bigger than the price suggests

At 4 135 mm long with a 2 650 mm wheelbase, the E2 is a meaningfully larger car than it might appear. For context, the BYD Dolphin Surf measures 3 925 mm with a 2 500 mm wheelbase, and the Dongfeng Box sits at 4 020 mm. The E2 is only 155 mm shorter than the full-size BYD Dolphin.

That extra length and wheelbase translates directly to cabin space and luggage capacity: the boot offers 375 litres with seats up, expanding to 1 320 litres with them folded, and a 70-litre front trunk adds storage the Dolphin Surf does not offer at all. The Dolphin Surf, by comparison, provides 308 litres and 1 037 litres.

The E2’s side profile shows the long wheelbase and short overhangs that free up interior and luggage space.

Power, performance and range

The electric motor produces 85 kW and 150 Nm, driving the rear axle through what Geely calls an 11-in-1 integrated drive system that combines motor, gearbox and control electronics into a single compact unit.

The 0 to 100 km/h time of 11.5 seconds is unremarkable, but the quoted 0 to 50 km/h sprint of 4.6 seconds reflects the responsive off-the-line character typical of rear-wheel-drive EVs. Top speed is 130 km/h. The official WLTP range is 325 km at a consumption figure of 15.2 kWh/100 km.

The 70-litre front trunk is a practical bonus the BYD Dolphin Surf cannot match.

Real-world range data from a test in Thailand, where the same 39.4 kWh variant is on sale, puts actual range at around 310 km from a full charge, roughly 95 percent of the WLTP figure. That is a solid ratio for an LFP battery. South African drivers should factor in highway speeds and summer temperatures, and plan accordingly for trips over about 250 to 270 km.

It is worth noting that South Africa is receiving the larger of the two battery options available in Geely’s global lineup. The domestic Chinese version of the Xingyuan is sold with a smaller pack offering a CLTC range of 310 km, while the export-spec 39.4 kWh battery aligns with the 410 km CLTC upper figure. There is no longer-range version being held back for other markets.

Charging

DC fast charging is supported at up to 70 kW, with Geely quoting 30 to 80 percent in approximately 25 minutes. A full AC charge from 10 to 100 percent takes around 6.5 hours. The E2 also supports Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing it to power external devices directly from the battery. All models include a wallbox home charger, subject to Geely Finance terms and conditions.

The dual-display cabin centres on a 14.6-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, standard across both grades.

What each grade gets you

The Aspire at R339 900 is the entry point. It rides on 15-inch steel wheels with aero covers, has fabric seats, manual air conditioning, a four-speaker audio system, rear camera and sensors, and keyless entry and start.

The dual-screen interior layout, with a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, is standard across both grades, as are Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth and 4G connectivity.

The Apex at R389 900 adds 16-inch alloy wheels, vegan leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless charging, a six-speaker audio system, ambient lighting in 256 colours, rear privacy glass, two-tone paint, and a full advanced driver assistance suite. That suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and intelligent high-beam control.

A 360-degree panoramic camera with transparent chassis view is also exclusive to the Apex.

Geely E2
Rear legroom is generous for the segment, aided by the flat floor and 2 650 mm wheelbase.

Ownership costs

At an electricity rate of R3.75 per kWh, the Geely E2 delivers remarkable efficiency, costing only R0.57 per kilometer. This is less than half the R1.43 per kilometer required for a comparable petrol vehicle consuming 6.5 litres per 100 km at R22.00 per litre. This results in a saving of R0.86 per kilometer, making the Geely E2 a significantly more economical choice.

The warranty package is competitive: four years or 150 000 km on the vehicle, eight years or 200 000 km on the battery, and five years of unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance. The service plan runs for five years or 100 000 km. Geely currently operates 32 dealerships in South Africa and has said it intends to grow that to 40 by the end of 2026.
